Brian Wettach: Alcohol, sex on agenda at Princeton workshop

A culture of hookups and drinking for the sake of drinking increases the occurance of inebriated sexual encounters in Princeton’s social scene, many students concluded at a workshop organized by the Alcohol Coalition Committee.

Of the roughly 50 students who met in the Rockefeller College common room for the three-hour workshop, titled “Sex and Alcohol on Campus — A Frank Discussion,” many were members of the ACC or peer advisers in Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources, and Education. (...) “The morning after a Thursday or Saturday night out, the first question that people ask is not ‘Did you have a good time last night?’ or ‘Did you have fun,’ but rather ‘Did you hook up with someone?’ ” noted Brian Wettach ’13, a member of the discussion group on gender roles.

“The one-time hookup has become the status quo, and long-term relationships are the oddity here,” Wettach added.

In Memory of Frank S. Wettack-Ssr., Founder of the Door of Hope

• A fruit banquet for 50 women now employed in the WPA sewing room and about 20 other women who are on the old age pension list will be held next Tuesday noon at the old city hall, it was announced today by Tom Turner of the Door of Hope. “The banquet will be in memory of the late Mayor Frank McClellan and Frank S. Wettack-Ssr., founders of the Door of Hope,” Mr. Turner said. Local case workers will assist Mr. Turner in serving the banquet. “I recently received some money to take a long trip, and want to use it for helping others and feel in this way that I am spending it for a good purpose,” he said.

Joey Robert Wettach (1966 - 2007)

In June 2007, Joey Robert Wettach died. His wife, Anna Wettach, writes: "He leaves behind his wife and best friend for 15 years, Anna Wettach and his proud parents, Walter and Chong Wettach. He was an amazing father to six beautiful children; Joseph, Jerica, Jordan, Jovan, Jenaya, and Jazilyn. He also leaves behind his sister, Jeanie Terico and his three nieces, Toni, Stephanie, and Zoe. Friends from all over the world miss him dearly.
Reminiscing with your "Brothers" has shown me of the good times you've had and of the great man that you are. Too early, too soon, but we were blessed to have had you in our lives. The Love, the memories and the stories from your years on Earth with us will be told over and over again to bring smiles to our faces and joy in our hearts. Matthew Wettach bound for boys state

A pair of Mt. Pleasant High School juniors are heading to the American Legion's Boys State convention, set for June 10-15, at Camp Dodge in Johnston.
The American Legion Bob Tribby Post #58 named Matthew Wettach and Jack Thomas as the two selectees for 2007.
According to member Dean King, the post's selection committee takes recommendations from its members, school counselors and other community sources to find two quality young men for Boys State. He said part of the search criteria includes students who are community-minded, exhibit leadership and good character and are academically sound.
"We try to pick the cream of the crop from the junior class," King said, "and in these two I think we did it." (...)
Wettach is the son of Drs. Steve and Mary Wettach and grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Wettach, all of Mt. Pleasant.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Rotary Interact Club, represents students on the Mt. Pleasant Community Library board and is on the student council.

His extracurricular school activities include chamber choir, symphonic band, show choir and jazz band. He has appeared in numerous school and community presentations, most recently as Professor Fenton in the school-sponsored play, "Bullshot Crummond."
Wettach has received the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, National Day Military Gold Award, Daily Point of Light National Award, the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and the Presidential Academic Award.

He has been honored by Gov. Chet Culver and Rep. Dave Heaton for his volunteer work and was selected for "Kids with Character" for his volunteer efforts. He currently ranks in the upper two percent in the junior class.
Wettach is also active in the Explorer Post 1846, interpreting Iowa history for visitors during Midwest Old Threshers and other special events.
Wettach is a member of the Swedesburg Luther League, presently serving as vice-president.

Boys State is a summer leadership and citizenship program sponsored by The American Legion for high school students between their junior and senior years.
The program participants are divided up into smaller groups that are given city names. The "citizens" of each of these cities then elect mock municipal officials and representatives to the mock state legislature.

If enough "citizens" are present, then a county level is added to the program between city and state. The participants also elect state officials, such as governor, lieutenant governor, and other state-level officials representing their real state.
The legislature then meets to organize, elect leaders, and to pass bills in a way that is similar to how their actual legislature operates. (...)

Matt said he felt honored to be selected for Boys State by the Legion.
"I hope to get a more accurate understanding on how government works, meet new people and new perspectives." (...) Wettach said he's hoping this will help prepare him for college. "It's going to be like a guys' dorm," he said. "We have five days to get to know each other." He noted that President Bill Clinton was a national boys stater, as were vice-presidents Al Gore and Dick Cheney.

F. Sheldon Wettack is Vice President and Dean of Faculty and Professor of Chemistry at Harvey Mudd College. Dean Wettack's career began at Hope College (1967) as a member of the chemistry faculty. Administrative Service at Hope College (Dean of the Natural and Social Sciences), the University of Richmond (Arts and Sciences Dean) and Wabash College (President) preceded his arrival at Harvey Mudd College in 1993. Dean Wettack has been involved with PKAL since the beginning of the project, with special emphasis over the past several years on the facilities workshops. He is currently the project director of Harvey Mudd's NSF-AIRE grant and of the Claremont Colleges' technology grant from the Mellon Foundation.

The Show Jumping Hall of Fame conducted its annual induction ceremonies during the intermission at the Budweiser American Invitational on Saturday, April 2, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. When Inductee 55 was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame, he joined 54 previous inductees whose contributions to the sport set them apart and earned them the honor of enshrinement in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. Among them, mentioned in the article by the US Equestrian Federation, Fred "Freddy" Wettach, Jr., Inductee of 1998. For this WettachBlog an opportunity to look at: Who was Freddy Wettach (+1976)?

Fred "Freddy" Wettach Jr. was born into a family of horsemen. His father, Fred Sr., owned and operated a well-known riding academy in New York City before World War I, and Freddy was expected to follow in his father's footsteps. Freddy started young and developed into a well-rounded horseman, showing hunters and jumpers, riding a few races and playing a bit of polo. His real passion, however, was the high jump, which in that era was the stellar attraction of any horse show.

In the 1920s Fred Sr. bought some polo prospects to finish and sell. Among them was a bald-faced Irish-bred gelding that looked more like a jumper to Freddy. He quickly found that King's Own could jump anything and he began campaigning him as a high jumper with conspicuous success. Before long Wettach was being urged to make an attempt at Heatherbloom's record of 8' 2", which had stood since 1902, and he found the challenge irresistible.

Wettach gathered witnesses and a photographer, eased the bar up to a height of 8' 3-1/2" and jumped it with room to spare. Technically the record was not official, not having been made in a sanctioned competition, but the same thing was true of Heatherbloom's mark; in any case 8' 3-1/2" is still generally acknowledged to be the highest anyone has ever jumped on horseback.

By 1931 Wettach had held no fewer than five different high-jump records-indoor and outdoor, tied rails and loose rails -- all with horses he had trained and ridden. But high jump was not the only thing at which Freddy excelled. As the popularity of high jumping began to wane in the 1930s, he turned more and more to hunters, including his celebrated grey mare, Plymouth Rock, who showed, as all his horses had done, under the stable name of Trillora Farm, Shrewsbury, NJ.

After World War II some of his greatest show-ring successes were recorded with horses he rode for Liz Whitney's Llangollen Farm of Upperville, VA, among them Dase and Safety Call, winners at all the major shows including Devon (PA) and New York's National Horse Show.

Celebrated for his immaculate turn-out, whether on horse or on foot, Freddy competed well into his fifties. After his retirement he lived in Delray Beach, FL, where he died in 1976.

“Improve one percent every day.” Coach Jeff Wettach right on Track

“Improve one percent every day.”

That’s the motto of the men’s track and field team. After placing third at the Augustana Viking Olympics behind Augustana (IL) and UW-Eau Claire, that one percent per day could mean a conference championship down the road for the men.

The Norse had six different first place finishes — three individual and three in the relay events.

Head Coach Jeff Wettach expressed excitement about the performance.

“It’s a great start to the outdoor season,” he said. “It was perfect for team development which is really important this time of year.

“Going into the meet, we talked about being confident, competing tough and having fun and we did all that.”

Matthew Wettach: Freshman shares history through works of great-grandfather

Matthew Wettach, freshman at Mt. Pleasant Community High School, presented his nationally recognized History Day Project at the Dover Museum in New London on Sunday.
Two summers ago, Wettach was given the option of participating in the 24th Annual National Contest of National History Day by his middle school teacher. Wettach knew that he had a great project in the photographs of his great-grandfather, Pete Wettach.
Pete Wettach's photography has played a large part in chronicling Iowa's history and was recently featured on Iowa Public Television.
Wettach knew that he would be able to utilize his great-grandfather's works to "express different aspects about the Great Depression and Roosevelt's New Deal."
His project did well on all levels, and eventually Wettach was asked to travel to the University of Maryland in Washington, D.C. to present his project. Wettach's hard work paid off, and he was awarded 2nd place at the national level.
While the project competed two years ago, Wettach still occasionally presents his project to interested parties. Over the past year and a half, he has presented his project approximately five times.

Megan talks Business - Wettach for Governor?

Mount Pleasant, Ia. - Megan Amanda Wettach - former Miss Teen Iowa, current Miss Burlington and would-be Miss Iowa - hurried into the store on the Mount Pleasant town square ready to talk business.

Her business.

A growing business.

"We did a half million dollars in revenue this past year," said Wettach, sitting a few feet from hundreds of prom dresses on the racks in her store. "I didn't have any idea this would be possible when I started."

Who, indeed, would have imagined?

The 21-year-old University of Iowa junior started her business when she was a senior at Mount Pleasant High School. She and her parents, Steven and Mary Wettach, both dentists in Mount Pleasant, sketched out a plan on a napkin driving home from a trip to West Virginia. They'd been there buying clothes for a pageant Wettach was entering and she wondered why there wasn't a store like that in Iowa.

"Lots of girls enter pageants," she said. "They need suits for interviews, swimsuits and gowns. I decided there was a niche."

And since every girl needs a prom dress - or two or three by the time they finish high school - why not sell those as well?

That's how the first business, Premier Prom & Pageantry, started in a small building next to her parents' house here. Word got around and girls started driving from Des Moines, Waterloo, Davenport, Illinois and Missouri for dresses.

Wettach moved her business to the town square, changed the name to Premier Prom and Bridal Boutique and started selling wedding dresses.

In 2002, her first year in business, she convinced suppliers a 17-year-old girl would pay the bills and she sold 75 dresses. Now, suppliers make dresses especially for Wettach. She has 18 employees, her business has been featured in national magazines and 1,500 dresses hang in her store.

Then there's a second business. It's her own line of clothes called the Megan Amanda Collection. She comes up with the concept, has dress designers in New York, China, Russia, Brazil and, yes, Mount Pleasant, sketch it out. The dresses are being manufactured in China and the first samples are going to buyers at retail outlets next week.

"This really is exceeding all of our expectations," she said.

One admirer is Gov. Tom Vilsack.

"She got that business started in high school and people in town scratched their heads about it," said Vilsack, a family friend from Mount Pleasant. "But she developed into an extraordinarily shrewd businesswoman. She has high expectations about herself and she's met those expectations. She's everything you'd want in a young person."

Wettach vows that her businesses won't keep her from finishing college. And she promises her businesses - including ones that aren't yet operating - will remain in Iowa.

"I was offered a job by a (dress) manufacturer to help double the size of his business," she said. It meant big money, but Wettach passed.

"It was a great opportunity, but I want my own businesses," she said. "The Megan Amanda Collection has the potential to be a multimillion-dollar business within several years. I'm going to have a national fashion label and have it based in Iowa."

That's because she is committed to making it all happen in Iowa.

"This is where I'm from," she said. "This is where I'm staying."

What about the future?

"I'm in the Miss Iowa Pageant in June," she said. "I'm taking a semester off college to prepare for that."

Will there be more businesses?

"I'd like to have stores around the Midwest. I'd like to become the number one prom dress wholesaler in the country. I'd like to be the CEO of several of my own businesses."

Marriage and kids?

"Absolutely. I understand I have to have a life."

What else?

"I'm thinking of politics someday. The truth? I'd like to be the first woman elected governor of Iowa."

The current governor won't be surprised if it happens. "She's going places," Vilsack said.

"I have goals," Wettach said. "I want to show young girls they can be successful in business and politics. I want to show them they can strive for excellence and succeed."

TRACK AND FIELD: Luther College women's cross country and track and field coach Betsy Emerson will resign effective at the end of the school year.

Jeff Wettach , who has been men's head track coach for 18 years and men's cross country coach for eight, will assume head coaching duties for the men's and women's programs at Luther.
